…on active orders during WW2. The 107th is a New York National Guard unit that was stood up to deploy during WW2. So what does this mean for fanfic writers?
–while Bucky’s service member ID number indicates he was drafted, he might have actually enlisted. While it was incredibly uncommon to enlist while WW2 was going on, it’s possible from Bucky’s rank and unit that he had enlisted prior to WW2 even starting, and was simply drilling with his unit and accumulating rank and time in service that way.
–Bucky might have joined the Guard to bring in a little extra money every month from his weekend drills.
–because Bucky was a Guardsman, he would have gone through Basic Training, and an advanced course for Infantry soldiers in order to train him on his job, which would have taken him away from home for 10 to 12 weeks each training time, or 26 weeks if he did his training back to back. He would have trained in GA, at Ft. Benning.
–if Bucky did enlist prior to WW2, he would have found it easier to get picked up by a Guard unit than an active duty unit.
–Bucky would still have held a full time career outside of the Guard, on the civilian side, up until he went on orders. He was not a full time soldier prior to then, and likely never had any plans to be.
–It’s possible that when we see Bucky in the alleyway in CA:TFA, he was wearing his uniform because he had just been released from Saturday or Sunday drill, and that he had received his orders to deploy earlier that day, likely during first formation.
–Also interesting to note: Steve likely never served in the 107th. Because he was put into a special program with the SSR, he would have fallen into a different division, (probably TRADOC, the training division) making him an active duty soldier, as opposed to the other US commandos that we see serving alongside Bucky in the deleted scene. It’s even possible that the Commandos, an auxiliary of the SSR, would have fallen under that same division, making Barnes, Morita, and Dugan (and possibly Jones) either manual transfers to the unit, and thus active duty soldiers, or attachments to the unit, and still Guardsmen.
